What makes Bloom different from all other graphics editors?
Bloom is the first truly non-destructive, procedural graphics editor. What this means is that any action you do while editing is stored separately and can be tweaked and adjusted later on - without re-doing anything else. So, for example, if you create a vector rectangle with rounded corners, edit its points, and then decide to change the corner radius, you can do so with two mouse clicks without having to redo the edits. This permiates the entire workflow, to the point where even resizing the document with multiple groups, layers, and effects can be tweaked at any point, even after making a number of changes after the resize.

What platforms does Bloom run on?
At the moment, Bloom runs on OS X 10.6 and higher and Windows Vista and higher, both 64-bit. We are planning on a Linux port, as well, although it is likely going to happen once version 1.0 is released.

Does using Bloom require a subscription?
The short answer is "no". :) The slightly longer version is that if you purchase Bloom through our website, you get an Bloom license and one year of free updates, bug fixes, and support. If, after that year, you wish to continue receiving updates, you can purchase another year of support, and so on. This is not an evil corporate plan, but rather a simple recognition of the fact that we are committed to long-term Bloom upgrades and development, all of which costs time and money. However, regardless of whether you extend your support or not, Bloom will continue to run, so no subscription is necessary.

If you purchase Bloom through Apple's or Microsoft's App Store, Bloom will similarly come with one year of free support and updates; however, after one year it will require a subscription to run (along with receiving all the updates). As above, this is not an evil corporate plan either, but rather comes down to the fact that these stores have no mechanism which would allow to install updates conditionally only for the users with extended support plans. If this type of subscription is not acceptable to you, we suggest you purchase Bloom directly from our website. :)

You say Bloom imports PSD files. What specifically does it import and does it support layers?
We understand why this question comes up. :) A lot of packages claim to import PSD files, but then either end up importing a single flattened image, or layers stripped of styles, masks, and blending effects. We are proud to have created the best-in-class PSD importer for Bloom, which supports not only layers and groups, but also masks on both of them, all layer blending modes, and even layer blending effects such as drop shadows and glows - even on groups! While we can't guarantee the documents will look pixel-perfect compared to Adobe Photoshop (they are completely different software packages, after all), they are very close in terms of their appearance, and all key information is preserved.

Can I edit vector shapes in Bloom?
Yes, absolutely. Bloom is designed from the ground up to allow both raster and vector editing to seamlessly operate together. In fact, because of its procedural nature, you can create and edit a vector shape, then apply a purely-raster filter to it such as blur or liquify, and then go back at any point and change the vector shapes further as you like.

Bloom starts up, shows a warning, and is very, very slow. What's going on?
This likely means your video card drivers are not installed or are out-of-date. The warning messages says that Bloom was unable to start in hardware-accelerated mode and has switched to software rendering, which is usually extremely inefficient and slow. Install the latest graphics drivers and all should be well.

Can I use Bloom on multiple computers? What's its license?
The short answer is "yes, you can use Bloom on multiple computers". Bloom's license allows it to be used by one person at a time - on any computer, any operating system, anywhere. We call this the "physical book model". Just like you can read your book at home, then take it to work, bring it back, even lend it to a friend, you can use Bloom anywhere, as long as only one person is using it concurrently. At the moment, licensing works via a simple serial number system. Floating licensing may be introduced later in other versions of Bloom.
